The Process of Level Design

Preliminary Concept

The Ludus Sphere is a virtual reality game hub where users can access and discover PC VR games. The originating idea for the level design was a series of hallways connected to a central hub where the player would spawn. These hallways contained portals that allowed users to browse and discover existing VR games. Each of these portals and hallways were built to represent the game genre hosted there.

Artistic References

I decided the theme for the map would be ancient roman architecture. I am inspired by the uniform stone pillars and the mystery of an ancient culture. I then used PureRef to find images that would allow me to replicate this environment in UE5. I continually used these images as reference throughout the process of level design.

Unique & Inviting Environments

Originally, I planned to have ten portals each with their own game genre. This was eventually scoped down to two portal environments. Each of these environments are unique to the genre they are representing. These genres are RPG(photo left) and RTS.

How Could it Be Improved?

Overall, I was very happy with how this project turned out. However, there is of course always room for improvement. I could improve the level design by: Adding more portals, adding elevation, obtaining more feedback from playtests and adding points of navigation.
